More and more people are choosing an alternative to factory grown, factory driven, factory supplied grocery stores. Most folks do not know the source of their food, let alone the way their food is raised or grown.

Unaware that there might be thousands of "food miles" added to their table before they eat a meal, they have lost a vital connection and lack an ongoing relationship with local farmers who grow to provide their communities with quality produce.

Questionable, careless and even cruel practices drive many factory farms and they provide 98% of the grocery store chains in North America. Buying local allows you to get to know the source, even visiting the farms where your food is grown. As a result, "conscience driven" farmers are attracting a growing number of consumers.

Our farmers share with you details about their products and their practices so that you can make the best decisions for your family's health and nutrition needs. Completely transparent, you will know exactly from where your food is coming.

With one online order, one payment and one pick up, you can order food directly from over 40 different family owned and operated farms and small businesses right here in Central Virginia.

How It Works

Food Co-ops are membership based. Members pay a small weekly, monthly or annual fee to access the online marketplace.

Each week producers post the products that they have available, setting their own prices, uploading their own descriptions and photos. You can read about their farming practices and contact them directly with questions.

The marketplace is open between Friday at noon to Monday at midnight. Orders can be placed at anytime during that window. You pay for your order online and then pick it up on the following Thursday afternoon between 3:00 and 6:00 pm at one of our Central Virginia pickup locations.

Shop by the item from participating farms selecting only the items you would like to order. There is no minimum order and you are not required to order each week.

Orders are delivered fresh, straight from the farms. Producers share in the delivery process and the Food Co-ops rely on volunteers to sort the orders at the pickup locations. This cooperative system allows them to keep delivery costs down to a minimum, meaning that more money goes back to the producers.

Once you're a member, you can switch your pickup location as often as you like. Your purchased products will be delivered to the location you select when you place your order.

This innovative online buying program allows small farms to sell their products as they become available and at a competitive, fair price that is set by them.

There's no required minimum quantity for them to sell, allowing very small start up farms to grow and expand into a larger marketplace. Food Co-ops like to think of themselves as an incubator for small sustainable farms.

We're not a reseller. When you order you're buying directly from the producers in our market.

What Others Do

Many so-called “local food" suppliers collect produce from several states and keep them stored in a central warehouse. The conscience-driven consumer orders online from a producer who they know to be a local farmer or producer. However, when the local suppliers' inventory of meat, cheese, eggs, tomatoes, etc. runs low, it's substituted with produce from a different, non-local supplier.

Unknowingly, buyers may be receiving their produce from another state or even another country.

As a result, many extra "food miles" are added onto the product before it gets to the customer's table.

What We Do

We don't warehouse, resell, import or substitute other producers' stock when you order. With Southern Legacy, Local Roots, and Fall Line Farms Food Co-ops, you buy directly from the farmer, baker or producer of your choice.

You're truly supporting local producers.

They list their own inventory and you buy directly from them. The farmer delivers your order fresh to a meeting location each week, where volunteers bring it to your pickup location. We believe in minimizing food miles as much as possible.
